Tiki and rum rooms in this metro sit downtown, at Disney’s Polynesian, at Universal, on Sand Lake, and in Horizon West. None of them is listed here as a happy hour, because none of them posts a discount window we can cite. Check hours on the host page before you drive.
What tiki actually is
Tiki is a drink style, not a decor style. The template comes out of two Los Angeles bars in the 1930s and 1940s: Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic’s. The grammar is rum, citrus, sugar, and spice, served very cold.
Four things do the work. Rum, usually two or three of them blended, so a light column rum carries the citrus and a heavier pot-still rum carries the finish. Fresh citrus, most often lime and grapefruit. Crushed ice, which chills and dilutes fast — a tiki drink is supposed to loosen as you sit with it. Orgeat, an almond syrup with a little orange-flower water, which is the flavor most people cannot name in a Mai Tai. Falernum, cinnamon syrup, and allspice dram fill out the rest.
Thatch, blowfish lamps, and carved idols came later. They are the costume, not the recipe. A bar with bamboo on the walls and sour mix in the well is not a tiki bar.
Aku Aku Tiki Bar — Thornton Park, downtown
The one dedicated tiki bar inside the city. It sits at 431 E. Central Blvd. in Thornton Park, a short walk from the downtown listings on this site. Rattan furniture, a large carved idol, hanging glass floats, and a rum shelf deep enough to matter. The menu runs classics — Zombie, Singapore Sling, volcano bowls to share — plus house builds. Ask the bartender what is off-menu; that is where the work goes.
Hours and the current drink list are on the bar’s own site: akuakutiki.com. It is the closest tiki room to a downtown route, so it slots after an early stop at Mathers.
Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto — Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
The most committed tiki room in Central Florida, and the hardest to sit in. It is on the ground floor of the Grand Ceremonial House at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Ordering certain drinks triggers effects in the room — a storm, a rumble, a bartender bit. That is the draw and it is genuinely done well.
Three things to know. It takes no advance reservations. Seating is a walk-up list you join in the My Disney Experience app once you are on property, and the room seats roughly fifty people, so evenings back up. The outdoor Tiki Terrace is a separate room with the same drink family and no indoor effects — and it is currently closed; see the next heading. You do not need a theme-park ticket to visit a Disney resort hotel; you can reach the Polynesian by monorail or boat.

Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace — same resort, currently closed
The outdoor counterpart to the Grotto sits under the palms outside the Grand Ceremonial House. Same drink family — Polynesian Pearl, Tahitian Torch — plus live music when it is open. Disney’s own dining page currently says the Terrace is closed for refurbishment and asks you to check back. Do not treat a blog reopen rumor as hours. The indoor Grotto stays open on its own page.

Tambu Lounge — same resort, one floor up
Tambu Lounge is on the second floor of the same building, next to the entrance for ‘Ohana. It is open-air, it is easier to get into than the Grotto, and its drink list overlaps: the Lapu Lapu, served in a hollowed pineapple, is the one people come up for. À-la-carte food from the ‘Ohana kitchen is part of the appeal.
Use it as the fallback. If the Grotto waitlist quotes you two hours, walk upstairs. Menu and hours: disneyworld.disney.go.com.
Wailulu Bar & Grill — Island Tower, not a tiki bar
Same resort, different building. Wailulu is the all-day bar and grill in the Polynesian’s Island Tower, looking out on Seven Seas Lagoon. Lava-rock bar, banquettes, breakfast through dinner — a hotel dining room with a view, not rattan and crushed ice. If someone sends you to the Polynesian for tiki, this is not that room. Strong Water Tavern — Loews Sapphire Falls, Universal Orlando
Worth a correction up front: Strong Water Tavern is not in Winter Park. It is in the lobby of Loews Sapphire Falls Resort at Universal Orlando, on Adventure Way off Turkey Lake Road.
It is also not a thatch-and-idol room. It is a rum bar: house-aged and vintage rums, a rum specialist on the floor to walk the shelf with you, Caribbean tapas, and a ceviche bar. If you want to taste rum as a category rather than drink it in a punch, this is the better room for that. Read the rum primer first and the shelf will make more sense. Maya SpeakTiki — Horizon West / Hamlin
Not Plant Street, not downtown. The operator lists a Horizon West room at 5365 Hamlin Groves Trail, Horizon West, FL 34787 — Hamlin, west of Winter Garden. The site is a location list and a contact form. It does not post hours or a drink list we can cite, so we do not invent them. Check that page before you drive.

Roka Hula — Sand Lake / Dr. Phillips
The operator calls it a modern Asian tiki bar. The Orlando room is at 7525 W. Sand Lake Road, Building A — Restaurant Row, the same Sand Lake corridor as the listings on this site. A second room is in Delray Beach. Hours and the current menu are not on the about page; use the operator site, not a roundup.

Nearby, but not tiki
Aku Aku shares 431 E. Central Blvd. with The Dust (formerly Stardust Lounge), the basement retro Vegas room downstairs. Same operator family, same address, not a tiki program: red leather, chrome, burlesque on the third Wednesday. Hours are on its own site. It is the walk downstairs after Aku Aku, not a substitute for it.
Two Winter Park rooms get suggested as tiki and are not. The Courtesy on Park Avenue is a small classic-cocktail bar — spirit-forward, measured, no rum-and-crushed-ice program. It is the better stop if you want a Manhattan and it does post a happy-hour window, which is on its venue page here. Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar in Winter Park Village is island-themed retail-plus-bar, not a tiki program; its posted hours are on its venue page too.
Skipper Canteen in Magic Kingdom’s Adventureland is a table-service restaurant with Jungle Cruise rooms and a nod to the Enchanted Tiki Room. It is not a tiki bar and it needs a park ticket. The Enchanted Tiki Room itself is a show, not a pour.
The Florida tiki landmark that is not this metro is The Mai-Kai in Fort Lauderdale — a three-hour drive, not an Orlando listing.
Reading a tiki menu
Four terms carry most of it. A float is an ounce of rum poured on top after the drink is built, so the first sip is stronger than the fifth. A swizzle is stirred with a swizzle stick in crushed ice until the glass frosts. A bowl is built to share and arrives with two or more straws — order one for the table, not one each. Overproof means over 50% ABV, and it is normally a float or a flame, not the base.
Tiki drinks hide their alcohol behind citrus and sugar. A Zombie is three rums. Pace accordingly, and see tipping on a deal for how to handle the check.
Making them at home
The Daiquiri is the whole category in three ingredients — rum, lime, sugar. Learn that ratio and a Mai Tai is a variation, not a new skill. Specs for six measured drinks are in cocktail recipes; the six tools are in home bar basics.
One tool matters more here than anywhere else: crushed ice. A canvas Lewis bag and a mallet give you dry, fast-melting ice that a blender cannot — the canvas wicks meltwater out.
